Brussels – The European Commission will select next December the first projects to create Artificial Intelligence (AI) factories with European Union funding after examining the first seven offers submitted to the first call closed at the beginning of this month, including an initiative promoted by Spain with the participation of Portugal, Romania, and Turkey.
As announced by Brussels when the call was opened last September, the AI factories will be created around the EU’s world-class European high-performance computing (HPC) supercomputers network and will be available to European players such as startups, industry, and researchers.
After this first bidding, there will be others periodically every three months as long as funds are available and until a maximum of December 2025. In total, this initiative will have about 1,000 million euros from the Digital Europe and Horizon Europe programs, as well as contributions from member states.
In addition to the project led by Spain, six other proposals have been submitted for this first call, with the participation of a total of 15 European Union countries and two other associated countries.
Thus, Spain’s plan together with Portugal, Romania, and Turkey will be evaluated alongside the proposals from Finland—with the participation of the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, and Poland—, Luxembourg, Sweden, Germany, Italy—with the participation of Austria and Slovenia—, and Greece.
The proposals submitted will now be evaluated by a group of independent experts, and the objective is that after EuroHPC’s decision next December, the projects will be launched “shortly thereafter.” (November 11)
