SOFIA/BRUSSELS – Bulgaria expresses its firm support for the heroic people of Ukraine in their fight for freedom, independence, peace, and prosperity. This was stated by the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on the occasion of 1000 days since the beginning of the war in Ukraine.
The brutal Russian terror did not break the Ukrainian spirit and courage during these 1000 days of war and justice will prevail, the statement adds. Bulgaria firmly supports the independence, territorial integrity, and sovereignty of Ukraine,” noted the Bulgarian acting Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Elena Shekerletova in a speech at the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels.
She pointed out the need to continue assistance to Ukraine in all areas. The information on the involvement of foreign countries in the conflict, such as the participation of military units from North Korea, is highly concerning and we condemn this, added Shekerletova.
The number of Ukrainians who have arrived in Bulgaria since the beginning of the war in February 2022 exceeds a million, reported a few days ago the Ambassador of Ukraine to Bulgaria Olesya Ilashchuk. She cited up-to-date statistical data according to which there are over 52 thousand Ukrainian citizens in Bulgaria who have received temporary protection status, and over 14 thousand of them are working.
According to information from the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, since the end of October of this year, over 50 thousand families of Ukrainian refugees have been supported by Bulgaria with over 88 thousand benefits on different legal grounds since the beginning of the war in Ukraine.
In New York at the meeting of the G-7+ foreign ministers, the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria Ivan Kondov stated that Sofia provides consistent support to Ukraine – political, financial, military, humanitarian, and diplomatic. Kondov emphasized that Bulgaria has committed to providing active support for Ukraine’s energy security and recalled that during the visit of the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Bulgaria in July 2023, a Memorandum of Understanding on energy cooperation was signed and joint working groups were established.
