The progress of Albania and the challenges faced by countries aspiring to become EU members, while outlining the European Commission’s approach to leading and supporting the enlargement process, were at the center of the meeting between the Governor of the Bank of Albania, Gent Sejko, and the EU ambassador in Tirana, Silvio Gonzato.
The meeting was held at the central bank premises where Governor Sejko thanked Gonzato for the technical assistance the EU has provided to strengthen the capacities of the Bank of Albania through IPA funds and Twinning programs, in key areas of central banking such as macroeconomic and financial stability, auditing, supervision, and payment systems, in support of its preparations for joining the European System of Central Banks and subsequently the Eurosystem.
Ambassador Gonzato congratulated Governor Sejko on Albania’s acceptance into the geographic SEPA area under the leadership and coordination of the Bank of Albania, as part of the regional project “For the modernization of payment systems in the Western Balkan countries.” He emphasized that with this membership, the Bank of Albania successfully fulfills one of its main ambitions within the framework of the European integration process.
During the conversation, Governor Sejko acquainted the interlocutor with the economic panorama in Albania, noting that despite challenging situations, the economic performance in the country is stable with quite good indicators. Governor Sejko emphasized that the focus of economic policies during this period has been oriented towards maintaining price stability, by adapting the stance of monetary policy as a prerequisite for maintaining the financial stability of our country and ensuring price stability domestically.
