Strasbourg/Ljubljana – The former Slovenian diplomat Marta Kos in her initial response after the confirmation of the new European Commission, where she will take the position of Commissioner for EU Enlargement, stated in the European Parliament that she feels immense responsibility. As she announced, she will travel to Kyiv on Saturday under her new responsibilities, although her mandate will officially begin on Sunday.
“I feel an extremely great responsibility because there are many tasks and enlargement has never been as important as it is today,” she assessed.
The first challenges, according to her, are helping candidate countries be as prepared as possible to join the European Union. However, she warned that this can take different lengths of time for different countries. It will also be important to cooperate with existing members so that they are ready for the entry of new ones.
She announced that together with the newly elected President of the European Council António Costa and the new EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, she will travel to Kyiv on Saturday. Right after Ukraine, the new Commissioner for Enlargement will visit Neum in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The new commission, led by German politician Ursula von der Leyen, and the new President of the European Council Costa will officially begin their mandates on Sunday.
Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob wished the new commission success in facing the challenges. He emphasized that the enlargement portfolio, which will be led by a commissioner from Slovenia, will be of exceptional importance for the European Union in the period ahead due to stability and security in the Western Balkans and especially in Ukraine, where for the first time a real possibility for a peaceful solution is emerging.
