As part of the European Newsroom’s mission to upskill journalists of its member agencies, an immersive three-day workshop offering a blend of theory and practice took place in Brussels.
AFP’s Laurent Kalfala, who facilitated the workshop, took participants through the complete process of video production—from planning to shooting and editing—all on a smartphone. Participants were also given a hands-on tutorial on how to set up for professional interviews using a range of equipment including lighting, tripods and microphones.
The workshop aimed at text journalists was attended by nine journalists of four agencies participating in the enr project.
The workshop kicked off with essential theoretical insights into storytelling and visual composition. Participants then moved to practical sessions, learning how to set up lights and cameras for professional interview settings.Outdoor shooting exercises added a layer of real-world experience, honing their skills in capturing compelling footage on the go.
By the end of the workshop, attendees had created fully edited video stories, mastering tools and techniques to elevate their reporting with smartphone journalism—proving that the best camera is the one you have in your pocket.
