Bratislava – The issuance of a temporary European Union (EU) travel document will be governed by new rules. This stems from the amendment to the Travel Documents Act, which was signed by Slovak President Peter Pellegrini on Friday. The presidential office announced this, informs TASR.
The new legislation defines the EU temporary travel document as a travel document with limited territorial and temporal validity bounded by the purpose of the journey, which is to return to the home country or another country of residence, with a standard validity period of up to 15 days. “In exceptional cases, a temporary travel document may be issued with a longer validity period,” explained the interior ministry.
The amendment also defines the fee for issuing an EU temporary travel document. It is to be 50 euros. The fee for applying for the issuance of a temporary travel document is also to be increased to this amount, and to 100 euros for an application for the repeated issuance of a temporary travel document within six consecutive months. Other consular fees will also increase so that they are divisible by five and do not require the use of coins.
The Directive of 2019 introducing the EU temporary travel document states that the EU temporary travel document is a travel document issued by a member state of the Union at the request of an unrepresented EU citizen, for instance in case of theft, loss, or destruction of his or her travel passport, or if it cannot be obtained within a reasonable period. The directive established rules and procedures for obtaining the document and also introduced a uniform format. The temporary travel document allows for the same type of diplomatic and consular protection in the visited country as that provided to nationals of the member state issuing the document.
