Nova Gorica – European Capital of Culture (ECOC) 2025 Nova Gorica-Gorizia is the recipient of the Melina Mercouri Prize of 1.5 million euros, awarded by the European Commission. The prize will be awarded to ECOC Nova Gorica-Gorizia in March 2025. The expert jury praised, in particular, the preservation of the central theme of overcoming borders to build unity and a common cultural identity, a strong commitment to European values, and determination and perseverance in facing challenges arising from the cross-border context.
They also praised the program with rich and diverse content and a thoughtful balance between European and local, which will be implemented by both cities on the Slovenian-Italian border. “Its appeal to a wide audience ensures the potential for significant cultural impact, not only for Nova Gorica and Gorizia but also for the broader European community,” the jury added according to GO! 2025.
Director of GO! 2025 Mija Lorbek said on Monday in response that it is the most important professional recognition for the preparation of the ECOC. “Valuable additional advice from experts also helps us achieve long-term goals in such a large project, which will give a lot to all residents even after 2025 and will maintain the connection of the local with the international. We look forward to a magnificent start on February 8,” she added.
At the same time, she announced that Nova Gorica would allocate the Melina Mercouri Prize throughout the year, especially for major ECOC events with a larger number of visitors entitled Stop the City! and for the main heritage projects, namely those that are expected to continue at the end of ECOC 2025 Nova Gorica-Gorizia.
