Bratislava – Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico on Monday (December 16) held a phone call with the President of the European Council António Costa. He appreciated that the new head of the Council is negotiating the draft conclusions of the European Council even before its meeting, which is scheduled for Wednesday (December 18) and Thursday (December 19). The press office of the Government Office of the Slovak Republic informed TASR about this.
According to Fico, Slovakia supports the preservation of gas transit routes between Ukraine and the member states of the European Union (EU).
“The maintenance of transit cannot just be a bilateral matter of the countries neighboring Ukraine, but a concern for the entire EU,” he noted.
Fico also informed that the issue of gas transport to Slovakia through Ukraine will be the subject of a phone call with the Ukrainian Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal on Monday evening.
According to the Prime Minister, Slovakia also supports further EU enlargement with new members. He claims that Serbia deserves special support, as it plays a crucial role in combating illegal migration.
We insist that the current situation in Georgia be assessed objectively. Any consideration of intervening in Georgia’s internal affairs by imposing sanctions is a red line for us,” Fico stated. He added that he will raise the issue of a double standard in assessing the state of the rule of law in individual EU member states in the discussion. (December 16)
