Bratislava – Declaration on Slovakia’s foreign policy, signed by the three highest constitutional officials of the Slovak Republic four months ago, currently provides sufficient space for the conduct of everyday political work and confirms the country’s anchoring in the EU and NATO. This was stated by the President of the Slovak Republic Peter Pellegrini, which was confirmed for TASR on Wednesday by the communication department of the Office of the President of the Slovak Republic.
The President also indicated that he is ready to talk about the topic of foreign policy after the election of the Chairman of the National Council (NR) of the Slovak Republic.
“The Declaration on Slovakia’s foreign policy, signed by the three highest constitutional officials of the Slovak Republic four months ago, clearly defines Slovakia’s firm anchoring in the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance, while also granting Slovakia the right to conduct sovereign foreign policy in all four cardinal directions,” said the presidential office in response to the proposal by Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD).
The declaration from September 2024, according to the President, currently provides sufficient space for the conduct of everyday political work. “However, the President is ready to discuss this topic at a meeting of the three highest constitutional officials after the election of the Chairman of the National Council of the Slovak Republic,” added the communication department.
The joint statement on a unified approach to foreign policy issues was signed on September 1, 2024, by the President, the Prime Minister, and the Deputy Chairman of the NR SR tasked with its management, Peter Žiga (Hlas-SD). In the memorandum, they declared Slovakia’s firm anchoring in the EU and NATO.
The Prime Minister wants to propose to the highest constitutional officials and chairs of coalition parties to issue a statement on the foreign policy orientation of the Slovak Republic. He announced this on Tuesday (January 7). According to him, it is to respond to the emergence of opinions other than those promoted by Brussels and the denial of fundamental democratic rules. According to Fico, the statement should also define principles by which the Slovak Republic is governed in foreign matters. (January 8)
