Brussels – “The president is recovering well, she is at her home in Hanover,” in Germany, said a spokesperson for the Commission, Paula Pinho. She is expected to resume her “appointments (…) by the end of the week” before scheduled trips next week, she added.
Ursula von der Leyen is due to participate in the World Economic Forum in Davos, organized in Switzerland from January 20 to 24, and will go to the European Parliament in Strasbourg during the plenary session scheduled from January 20 to 23.
The visit of the European Commission to Poland, which had been postponed due to Ms. von der Leyen’s “severe pneumonia”, will take place on February 6 and 7. Poland has held the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union since early January, for six months.
Still recovering, Ursula von der Leyen will not chair the meeting of the college of European commissioners on Wednesday. Vice-President Teresa Ribera will take over.
The Commission confirmed on Friday that its German president had just returned home after a week of hospitalization.
The Commission had never previously mentioned this hospitalization and assured that Ursula von der Leyen continued “to exercise her functions” remotely, “in close and daily contact with her team”. (January 13, 2025)
