SANTA BARBARA – The Bulgarian satellite “Balkan-1” was launched into orbit to transmit data for the European Union’s “Copernicus” program. The satellite is a development of the company “EnduroSat” and was launched into space from a base in Santa Barbara, California, with the “Falcon 9” rocket of the company “SpaceX”.
The Bulgarian satellite is part of the EU’s main space program, which aims to explore various characteristics of the Earth. It is the first entirely Bulgarian satellite with a scientific function and for security purposes, explained to BTA Lyubomir Toshev from the Bulgarian company “EnduroSat”.
“Balkan-1” can monitor maritime areas and ships, serve in disasters, in mapping, monitor coastal zones and strategic infrastructure. The satellite is equipped with a sensor to track the content of various chemicals and elements in water and soil, Toshev explained.
The EU’s “Copernicus” program monitors the state of the environment and is part of the European civil protection system. (14.01.2025)
