Bratislava – It is true that the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) are the living space for Slovakia, but no one can prevent criticism of their functioning or direction. Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic Robert Fico (Smer-SD) stated this in a video on social media on Saturday evening, defending his party colleague, the Deputy Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic Tibor Gašpar, informs TASR.
Fico emphasized that Gašpar “accurately described the situation” in the European Union, and also that Slovakia must be prepared for various development scenarios.
“It is no secret that some European leaders, in response to the weakening of the EU’s competitiveness, are considering creating some kind of superstate, in which the sovereignty of national states would be significantly limited,” he said. And he warned that the development could also lead to the disintegration of the Union.
“Just as the Warsaw Pact disintegrated within a year, world events may consign the EU and NATO to history books, and crying from Slovakia will not help in any way,” noted Fico.
The Prime Minister also spoke about the visit of representatives of the opposition movement PS in Kiev and their meeting with the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He is convinced that Zelenskyy, despite PS’s claims about their willingness to negotiate the transit of gas through Ukraine to Slovakia, does not allow such an option. He deduces this from Zelenskyy’s unwillingness to meet in the coming days at the economic forum in Davos.
He even believes that Zelenskyy’s intention is generally to boycott the transit of gas from east to west, he also connects it with the attack on the TurkStream pipeline. He wants to discuss the protection of the southern branch of the pipeline from east to west not only during his Monday (January 20) visit to Turkey with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, but also with the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who is to come to Slovakia on Tuesday (January 21).
“I am convinced that President Zelenskyy is increasingly forcing us into reciprocal measures and we will go into them,” stated the Prime Minister. He leans most towards the possibility of vetoing further European financial aid to Ukraine. (January 19)
