Bratislava – The words of the Deputy Speaker of the National Council (NR) SR Tibor Gašpar (Smer-SD) about the possible withdrawal of Slovakia from the European Union and NATO were twisted. This follows from the statements of the chairman of the Slovak National Party (SNS) and Deputy Speaker of the NR SR Andrej Danko in the Sunday discussion program STVR O 5 minút 12. Opposition MP and Chairman of the SaS party Branislav Gröhling reiterated that he wants to confirm Slovakia’s anchoring in European structures also by amending the constitution, TASR reports.
“The EU brings us countless advantages, but if Brussels questioned our need for gas transit through Ukraine and forced us expensive liquefied gas, if Brussels defended the interests of only Western states, it is natural that such a discussion will arise,” said Danko, stating that in his opinion, EU reform is necessary.
In the mentioned program, Gröhling criticized the trip of the deputy speakers of the NR SR Danko and Gašpar to Moscow. According to him, it brought nothing to the Slovak citizens. “Currently, there is a mess in the land registry, and people are worried about their properties. And no one is addressing it in any way, only Mr. Danko presented himself with videos from Moscow,” he stated.
Danko also responded on television to a question regarding the criticism of ambassadors of Western countries. His statements to the Russian news agency TASS, that Western countries are creating a conflict between Slovaks, Czechs, Poles, and Hungarians and “Germans, French, and Americans even rejoice in it,” were objected to by the ambassadors of the United States, France, and Germany. The ambassadors expressed deep concern over these claims, calling them untrue and incorrect, and this accusation, according to them, does not reflect the friendly relations Slovakia has with other members of the EU and the USA.
“I stand by every word. For Germans, French, we are slaves, Germans are declining because they are dependent on the United States of America. It was a huge historical mistake that when the Russians left, the American troops did not also leave Europe,” Danko said.
The discussants in the television program also touched on gas prices. The chairman of SaS in the program criticized his opponent that they could have prepared in advance for the stoppage of gas transfer from Ukraine, as other EU countries did. Danko stated that gas is four times more expensive and the increase in its price is the fault of the President of Ukraine. (January 19)
