SOFIA/BRUSSELS – It is important for the cooperation between the EU and the US to continue to develop, said the new Bulgarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev, who participated in the meeting of his colleagues in Brussels.

He noted the need for a positive agenda in transatlantic relations, achieving common interests in economics, security and defense, energy, and addressing common challenges to peace. It is important for us that the cooperation between the EU and the US in the region of the Western Balkans and the Black Sea, which has a stabilizing role in this part of Europe, continues and develops, said the Minister.

Georgiev emphasized Bulgaria’s support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. No initiative for Ukraine can be undertaken without Ukraine itself and the participation of the EU, said the Bulgarian minister. He outlined the need to continue assistance to Kyiv and support on its path to the EU and condemned the ongoing Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure. For Bulgaria, the adoption of a new strategy for the Black Sea region is crucial, he emphasized.

The minister discussed with the EU Commissioner for Enlargement Policy Marta Kos the process of European integration of the countries from the Western Balkans, Ukraine, and Moldova, announced the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Bulgaria has a consistent policy in support of the European integration of all candidate countries, while strictly applying the principle of their own merits and the implementation of the agreements reached so far, stated the Bulgarian Foreign Minister.

Only based on real results and progress can trust be built between the membership candidates and the EU, which is crucial for the success of the integration process, added Georgiev.

At the EU Council meeting, he also spoke with the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, as well as with the Foreign Ministers of Romania and Italy. (January 27)
