«Returning from Brussels, where I discussed ways to strengthen our collective defense with my European counterparts, I was pleased to hear the statements of the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen: the President of the Commission stated that she is ready to explore ways of fiscal flexibility to increase defense spending within the framework of the Union’s new Stability Pact», Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated in a post about developments concerning the strengthening of European defense.
«I was among the first to support this direction, long before it came to the fore. I remind you that I have analyzed it in all European summit meetings. And I did the same with my article in the Financial Times before Monday’s informal summit, where I again argued that the time for common European defense has come», he emphasized.
He also noted: «With President Tusk, we have specifically signed a letter, since May 2024, requesting the funding of our continent’s unified anti-aircraft shield.
It seems that from now on the road to enhancing European defense is opening up, with more and more forces recognizing its necessity. In an uncertain and unstable world, Europe is called upon to claim its place in terms of security and progress.
And for this to happen, a broader fiscal space is necessary, which will allow member states to spend for their protection without questioning their economic prospects.
