Brussels – The EU countries are temporarily lifting most of their sanctions against Syria, hoping for a positive political development after the reign of former leader Bashar al-Assad.
Among other things, cooperation is reopening in transportation and energy sectors, including trade in gas and oil.
Transactions will also be allowed to Syrian banks and financial institutions regarding transport, energy, reconstruction, and humanitarian efforts. Additionally, five Syrian banks are being removed from the list of those whose assets have been frozen.
However, sanctions remain on issues including arms trade, surveillance equipment, and the import and export of antiquities.
