Berne – Switzerland and the European Union have reached a “good and advantageous agreement for both partners,” Swiss President Viola Amherd said on Friday, with European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen hailing a “historic” agreement.
The Swiss government gave the green light to a rapprochement agreement with the EU on Friday, but the path towards eventual final adoption by the Swiss Parliament and voters will be long and fraught with obstacles.
The Swiss President and the Commission President met in Bern to mark “the end of substantive negotiations between Switzerland and the EU.”
“This day marks an important step in stabilizing and developing our bilateral relations,” commented Ms. Amherd, assuring that the Swiss government “is convinced that the negotiating outcome is good and advantageous for both partners.”
“The negotiations were intense and allowed for the balanced preservation of the interests of Switzerland and the EU,” said Ms. von der Leyen. (December 20, 2024)
