Brussels – As early as January, the European Commission promises to launch a “strategic dialogue” about the future of the car industry in Europe. The announcement comes after crisis headlines for many major car brands, which has also led to demands for relaxed environmental regulations.
“It is our responsibility to tailor solutions that are both clean and competitive,” says President Ursula von der Leyen in a press release.
Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on his way into Thursday’s EU summit in Brussels that he wants to see a European support program for electric cars. At his press conference afterward, he also announced that the car industry will be discussed when EU leaders gather for the next regular summit in Brussels in March 2025.
According to Council President António Costa, the meeting will focus on competitiveness, trade, and employment.
