The European Union Ambassador to Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, handed over the EC’s progress report on Albania for the year 2024 to the Albanian authorities. Gonzato held meetings with President Bajram Begaj, Prime Minister Edi Rama, Speaker of the Parliament Elisa Spiropali, and the Chairwoman of the Committee on European Affairs, opposition Democratic Party MP, Jorida Tabaku.
Gonzato described it as a good day for Albania, emphasizing that now is the time to seize the opportunity and accelerate the reform process for the benefit of the Albanian people.
“This will require steady political leadership, broad bipartisan commitment, a solid negotiating structure, as well as effective and inclusive consultation mechanisms with the wider society and stakeholders,” said Gonzato.
Meanwhile, responding to journalists’ interest, Gonzato said that the EU supports Albania’s plan to close all membership chapters by 2027.
“This has been shown by the screening processes on the part of the EU, this is an offer on our part for readiness and support, but it also requires considerable effort and political will on the part of Albania, as well as the readiness of the member states to open chapters,” he emphasized.
In a joint media appearance with Ambassador Gonzato, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama stated that “beyond all internal polemics, the 2024 Progress Report for Albania makes a high assessment of the implementation of the justice reform.”
“Certainly, there are specific points that need to be addressed and there are still gaps that need to be filled, quite rightly,” added Rama.
“I am pleased that year by year we receive better ratings, but we are very aware that to receive the maximum rating, which is the seal of EU membership, we have much more to do and we have flaws and gaps to address and we are convinced that we have all the capacities to address them, thanks also to the increasingly close partnership we have with the delegation of the European Commission here and the EC itself in Brussels,” said Rama.
