Stockholm – Everything is set for the EU’s prosecutor cooperation to become fully operational in Sweden after the turn of the year.
Martin Bresman, head of the National Unit Against Corruption at the Prosecutor’s Office, will become the first Swedish prosecutor at the EPPO’s headquarters in Luxembourg. At the same time, the EPPO can start its operations in Stockholm, where two European prosecutors will be stationed.
The EPPO investigates and prosecutes crimes against the EU’s financial interests. This can involve fraud, money laundering, corruption, and bribery.
The operation started in 2021, but Sweden initially chose to remain outside.
“That Sweden is now becoming a member of the EPPO means better opportunities for more effective cooperation to combat crime, recover criminal proceeds, and safeguard Swedish taxpayers’ money,” said Swedish Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer in a previous statement.
