Recommendations for a more sustainable future in aviation were presented by the European Commission in its report for 2025.

This is the 4th «European Aviation Environmental Report,» which provides a comprehensive review of the environmental performance of the aviation sector and the progress made since the last report in 2022. The Commission presents recommendations to reduce the impact of aviation on climate change, noise, and air quality. It is recommended to focus on measures such as increasing the use of sustainable aviation fuels, leveraging air traffic management optimizations, and adopting more fuel-efficient technologies. With the implementation of these measures, emissions could be reduced by at least two-thirds by 2050, compared to a business-as-usual scenario.

Since the previous report, there have been significant developments in sustainable aviation fuels and improvements in performance related to air traffic management. However, the Commission points out that the projected increase in air traffic demand, at both European and global levels, requires further action. Aviation, like all other modes of transport, must play its role and contribute to the EU’s ambitious goal of achieving a climate-neutral future by 2050. Air traffic is expected to increase and reach 11.8 million annual flights by then.

Regarding the report, the Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, stated: “Environmental sustainability in aviation is the defining challenge of the 21st century and is key to the growth of the sector while ensuring vital connectivity for our citizens. By monitoring progress and identifying areas for improvement, the «European Aviation Environmental Report» provides the data for decision-making to keep European aviation aligned with community and international environmental goals.

The report is compiled by the Commission, along with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, with the support of the European Environment Agency and Eurocontrol. (01/14/2025)
