Brussels – The French National Rally (FN) joined the new radical right-wing group of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Monday to form the third force in the European Parliament ahead of those of Giorgia Meloni and Emmanuel Macron.
FN leader Jordan Bardella will chair this group named “Patriots for Europe,” announced FN MEP Jean-Paul Garraud during a meeting in Brussels, the day after legislative elections in France which saw the far right progress less than expected and fail to obtain a majority in the National Assembly.
The group will consist of 84 MEPs from 12 nationalities and will represent “this sovereignist movement to which we are very attached,” Garraud said at a press conference.
“We are resolutely opposed to this ultra-federalist aspect of the European Union, the fact that the EU wants to dominate states at all costs,” he explained. Matteo Salvini’s Italian League has also sealed its participation in the new alliance. (08.07.2024)
