The city of Berat, 120 kilometers southeast of Tirana, is a UNESCO-protected cultural heritage area and one of the gems of Albania that attracts thousands of visitors.
The European Union is among the city municipality’s partners in supporting the sustainable development of the area by valuing nature, traditions, and local values.
The EU Ambassador Silvio Gonzato, accompanied by the mayor of Berat, Ervin Demo, visited some of the main projects funded by the EU in Berat.
The first project is a new bridge about 280 meters above the Osum River. The Bilça Bridge will create new opportunities for local communities on both sides of the river, will connect Berat with its beautiful rural areas, and ease traffic in the historic Gorica neighborhood.
The Berat Educational Service Center, rehabilitated by the ”EU4Municipalities” program, is a project that has now been realized.
The center offers educational support services for all the kindergartens and schools in the city, with more than 5,000 children. It also provides training and raises awareness about children’s mental health for teachers and parents.
When you are in Berat, a visit to its castle is a must. To make it accessible to everyone, the EU will finance work to improve access to the castle, a vibrant space with unique architectural values.
“Through a multitude of projects in Berat, in partnership with the municipality we are creating new opportunities for growth and economic prosperity, empowering local businesses and promoting tourism that preserves nature and celebrates the essence of Berat,” declared EU Ambassador to Tirana, Silvio Gonzato. / (May 3)
