Under the coordination of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, two multifunctional military aircraft from Romania have arrived in Albania.
With a capacity of 6.0 tons of water, they will assist Albanian firefighting teams in combating the severe fires.
The two planes will be deployed today.
The European Commission is closely monitoring the situation and is ready to provide further assistance if needed.
This summer’s high temperatures have brought a problematic fire situation to Albania, where recently flames have endangered homes and protected areas.
The civil emergency and army troops have been trying for days to bring the flames under control in Selenicë, Finiq, Delvinë, in the national park of Tomor while simultaneously working on smaller fires.
Albania has intensified measures against intentional arson, while authorities are urging citizens to be cautious.
The country’s Civil Emergencies said that in the last 24 hours, 23 fire hotspots have been extinguished, while 12 remain active. / (August 14)
