BRUSSELS – The European Commission’s Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton told billionaire Elon Musk in a letter on Monday that he must comply with European Union laws ahead of Musk’s interview with US presidential candidate Donald Trump on the social platform X.
The interview, scheduled for two o’clock after midnight on Tuesday Central European Time, will also be available to users in the European Union, Breton wrote.
“In this context, I am compelled to remind you of the due diligence obligations under the Digital Services Act (DSA),” he added.
“DSA obligations apply without exception or discrimination to moderating the entire X user community and content (including you as a user with more than 190 million followers), available to users in the European Union and must be adhered to with a risk-based approach from the DSA, which requires greater attention in the event of a possible risk profile increase,” Breton wrote.
DSA requires very large online platforms to do more to curb illegal content and public safety risks.
European tech regulators ruled last month that X violated the DSA and misled its users by using blue checkmarks. (August 12, 2024)
