Skopje – The enlargement of the European Union with the Western Balkan countries remains a priority of the Polish presidency of the Council of the Union, which began at the beginning of this month, says in an interview for “360 Degrees” the chargé d’affaires of the Polish ambassador in North Macedonia, Mariusz Brimora. He assures that Poland has not abandoned the Balkans as part of its priorities and emphasizes that his country will continue and strengthen activities to accelerate the accession of the region to the Union.
Regarding the blocked Euro-integration of the country, Brimora announces that the Polish presidency will engage in efforts to overcome the deadlock, revealing that soon representatives of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs will depart for Sofia where, among other things, the situation with North Macedonia will be discussed.
Regarding the “deadlock”, in which the country finds itself, he emphasizes that it is a one hundred percent bilateral issue and as such should be resolved by the involved countries. According to him, what other EU member states can do is to support a solution that is in the direction of achieving a compromise on any international forum or at the EU level, and as he adds, they will definitely support such a solution.
– But, it depends on you, to start talking and agree on a compromise, stated Brimora, adding that for now, the main task of the Government in Skopje is to start talking and as soon as possible come to some conclusion, which is acceptable to both countries.
Regarding constitutional changes with delayed effect, he says that some allies of the Government insist that it is possible, but adds that on the other hand, there is no indication that Brussels or Bulgaria would change their position.
– I am not sure that this proposal can be effective. The new EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, as you heard, stated that she expects Macedonia to implement the constitutional changes. Everything is tied to the old Latin principle in international law – pacta sunt servanda, which means that agreements must be honored, emphasizes Brimora. (January 17)
