MUNICH – Bulgaria attaches great importance to joint projects with Romania in the field of cross-border cooperation. This was stated by Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev at a meeting with his Romanian counterpart Emil Hurezeanu within the framework of the Munich Security Conference, reported the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The two countries cooperate under the INTERREG program with a total budget of 207,457,162 euros – from the European Regional Development Fund and national co-financing. Through it, investments are made in projects related to climate change, risk prevention and management, environmental preservation and protection, promotion of resource efficiency, sustainable transport, employment promotion, and labor mobility, as stated on the website of the Bulgarian Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works (MRDPW).
At the Munich meeting, the Bulgarian Foreign Minister pointed out that Romania is among Bulgaria’s leading trade and economic partners. According to him, Bulgaria attaches great importance to the expansion and deepening of traditionally good bilateral economic relations.
Bulgaria highly values the excellent relations of good neighborliness, friendship, and partnership with Romania, in the spirit of which we managed to achieve the full accession of both countries to Schengen, Georgiev also said. The two countries became full members of the Schengen area at midnight on January 1, 2025.
The ministers also discussed the consistent support that both countries provide to Ukraine in its efforts to maintain its independence and territorial integrity and in its legitimate right to self-defense. (14.02.2025)
