SOFIA/BRUSSELS – The acting Minister of Defense Atanas Zapryanov participated in the signing of the letters of intent for cooperation in acquiring capabilities and developing European missile and air defense, reported the Ministry of Defense. Zapryanov took part in the meeting of his colleagues from the EU Council in Brussels.
The initiative received political support from 18 EU countries, the ministry noted. The signing of letters of intent provides an opportunity for future joint acquisition of defense capabilities in several directions, the statement clarifies.
Last week, the EC approved funding for five joint projects between EU countries for defense procurement. Each of the projects will be supported with 60 million euros and Bulgaria is participating in one of them. A total of 11 billion euros is planned to be secured for joint defense procurements. Orders for acquiring air and missile defense systems, armored vehicles, and ammunition will be supported.
Bulgaria is also participating in one of the orders for providing medium-range air defense systems, and the order is part of the development of the European Air Defense Program and provides protection against fighters, helicopter attacks, and drones, the commission clarified.
Zapryanov confirmed Bulgaria’s commitment to the common European efforts in support of Ukraine at the EU Council meeting and highlighted the importance of the EU Military Mission in assisting Kyiv. (November 19)
