MUNICH – Students from the “Electronic Systems” Technological School at the Technical University of Sofia won third place in one of the most prestigious technological events in Europe – the 2024 European Defense Technology Hackathon, announced the university.
The Bulgarian team presented with the topic “Identification of anti-personnel mines using drones and artificial intelligence”.
For the technological event, eleventh-graders Kaloyan Miladinov, Ognyan Rassadov, Philostratos Titopoulos, Alexander Mechkarov, as well as their mentors Petar Kirkov and Kirilka Angelova developed a drone module that localizes anti-personnel mines in the scanned area and visualizes their location on the map. The localization of the mines is done by analyzing the thermal image of the scanned area.
The goal of the project is to make the identification of anti-personnel mines cheaper and easier, which continue to take innocent victims years after military conflicts, delaying the recovery of normal societal and economic functioning.
As a satellite event of the Future Festival in Munich, the technological hackathon aims to bring together the academic and public sectors, investors, and users of dual-use and defense products. This year’s focus was on ideas in the areas of defense and the protection of human life.
The hackathon is supported by many companies in the fields of technology, robotics, artificial intelligence, and the aerospace industry, as well as by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. (03.07.2024)
