Bratislava – Slovakia is delayed in preparing the national energy and climate plan (NECP). It is among the last member countries of the EU that have not yet submitted it. The European Commission (EC) has already urged Slovakia to submit the plan. This was pointed out on Monday by the Climate Coalition, reports TASR.
The Climate Coalition is a platform of environmental organizations whose aim is to promote solutions that are sustainable both ecologically and economically, and at the same time contribute to a fairer society.
“Slovakia is among the last four EU countries that have not yet submitted the national energy and climate plan. We therefore face infringement from the European Commission and random ill-conceived projects such as the PVE Málinec proposal, the Carpathian tunnel, or fossil heating,” announced the Climate Coalition, according to which there is a lack of a comprehensive and coordinated government approach to addressing climate change, as well as the economic and security challenges related to it.
The Climate Coalition recalled that the NECP is supposed to determine how Slovakia will use approximately 15 billion euros by 2030 from European funds for climate protection. It added that the document is delayed to such an extent that the EC has initiated legal proceedings against Slovakia in this regard. According to the organization, the last submitted draft was insufficient and did not meet the requirements for an effective solution to the climate crisis.
According to the coordinator of the Climate Coalition, Dana Marekova, strategic plans are fundamental for reducing emissions, energy saving, and implementing modern technologies including renewable sources. It is important to take into account the needs of the population with an emphasis on socially vulnerable groups.
The organization reminded that Slovakia is a country with a high dependence on the import of gas, oil, and coal, and reducing this dependence has been neglected for years. “Now we face the challenging task of changing the energy system, which, however, can have impacts on ordinary people. For this, a social-climate plan should serve. If it is well-prepared and includes a good definition of energy and transport poverty, it would help the socially vulnerable in a targeted way instead of subsidizing energy for all, especially the rich and energy wasters,” added the Climate Coalition.
Member states were supposed to submit the revision of the NECP to the EC by June 30, 2024. (March 24)
