BRUSSELS – Dutch European Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra will temporarily take on an additional task. The ‘Transport’ portfolio will be added to his role as Climate Commissioner. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen decided this because Transport Commissioner Adina Valean is stepping down from her role.
The Romanian Valean will be a Member of the European Parliament in the new European Parliament starting Tuesday. She will join the European People’s Party group, which also includes the CDA, for example.
Additionally, Environment and Fisheries Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius will also move to the European Parliament. The Lithuanian will strengthen the ranks of the Greens. His responsibilities in the European Commission will temporarily be taken over by Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, who is responsible for the environmental agreements of the Green Deal, among other things.
The new EU parliament will hold its first plenary session in Strasbourg on Tuesday.
