BRUSSELS – The quality of bathing water in Croatia remains among the highest in Europe, and is ranked first when it comes to coastal bathing sites, according to a report published on Tuesday by the European Commission and the European Environment Agency.
According to the report with data for the past year, the highest proportion of excellent bathing waters is in Greece, Croatia, Cyprus, and Austria. The report covers 27 member states, as well as Albania and Switzerland.
According to the Bathing Water Directive, the quality of bathing water is assessed based on microbiological data and is classified as poor, sufficient, good, and excellent quality.
The quality of coastal bathing waters in Europe is generally better than in inland waters.
Of the 936 bathing sites tested in 2023 in Croatia, 905, or 96.7%, were of excellent quality, 22 of good quality, and 5 of sufficient quality. None were of poor quality.
When it comes to coastal bathing sites alone, Croatia ranks first in Europe, with 886 out of 894 tested waters being of excellent quality, which is 99.1%.
As for inland bathing waters, out of 42 tested bathing sites, 19 had excellent quality water, or 45.2%, 18 were of good quality, and three were of sufficient quality. (May 28, 2024)
