BRUSSELS – Croatia is the last country in the EU in terms of the use of renewable energy sources in the transport sector according to data for 2023, Eurostat announced on Friday.
Only 0.9 percent of registered means of transport were powered by energy from renewable sources in 2023. Slightly better than Croatia are Latvia with 1.4 percent and Greece with 3.9 percent. The highest share of renewable energy sources in transport is held by Sweden with 33.7 percent, followed by Finland with 20.7 percent, the Netherlands with 13.4 percent, and Austria with 13.2 percent.
The average EU level share of renewable energy sources amounted to 10.8 percent, which is an increase of 1.2 percent compared to the previous year, 2022.
The EU has set a target that by 2030, the share of renewable energy sources in transport should reach 29 percent. This means that it is now 18.2 percentage points away from that goal. To reach the set goal, the share of renewable sources would need to increase by 2.6 percent annually. The average annual growth share of renewable sources from 2014 to 2023 was only 0.43 percent.
