Brussels – The new EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and Georgia will be Czech Magdalena Grono. Her appointment was announced by the EU Council in its statement. Grono will take office on September 1, replacing Estonian Toivo Klaar, who held the position for more than six years.
“As the new EU Special Representative, Ms. Grono will continue the work of her predecessors and contribute to the implementation of the EU’s foreign policy objectives in the region,” the press release states. “She will contribute to the peaceful settlement of conflicts, including the crisis in Georgia and the process of normalizing relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, in close coordination with the UN and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE),” the text adds.
Grono has so far served as the chief diplomatic advisor to the President of the European Council Charles Michel. She has been working in foreign policy and conflict resolution for the past 25 years, particularly focusing on the former Soviet space and the South Caucasus. Before joining Michel’s cabinet, she was the foreign policy advisor to former European Council President Donald Tusk. (July 26)
