Prague – People in the Czech Republic trust nuclear energy the most in the entire EU. Up to 77 percent of Czechs believe in its positive effect for the future, which is the highest number among all union countries. On the contrary, the most negative approach is shown in neighboring Austria. This is according to a new Eurobarometer survey.
One of the topics of the survey was the question of the attitude of state residents towards nuclear energy. In this area, the Czech Republic was the leader in support. Over 29 percent of Czechs in the survey stated that they believe in the very positive impact of nuclear energy for further technological and energy development in the country. Another 48 percent of people from the Czech Republic expressed a rather positive attitude in the survey. Conversely, around 17 percent of Czechs declared a very or rather negative stance, which is the least in the union.
“This European survey confirms our long-term data. Support for nuclear energy in the Czech Republic has been the highest within the entire EU for almost a quarter of a century, since the launch of the Temelín nuclear power plant. It also shows that Czechs have always been closer to technology than other European states since the time of Austria-Hungary,” said Ladislav Kříž, spokesperson of ČEZ, regarding the results.
At the opposite end of the spectrum in terms of attitude towards nuclear energy are some neighboring countries. The negative impact of nuclear energy is most feared in Austria, where 67 percent of respondents expressed this view. Distrust towards nuclear energy prevailed, albeit slightly, also in Greece and Germany. In other EU countries, a rather positive opinion on nuclear energy prevailed over negative.
The growth in support for nuclear energy has also been confirmed by some Czech surveys. According to a survey by the IBRS agency from the end of last year, 71 percent of the population agrees with its development, which is about two percentage points more than a year ago.
Nuclear energy, along with renewable resources, should become the main sources of the energy mix in the Czech Republic according to government plans in the future. (February 10)
