There is less than a year until Denmark takes over the EU presidency, and preparations are in full swing.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) emphasized on Wednesday that Denmark will focus on climate, its own security, and the influx of migrants into Europe.
“The green transition will be one of the priorities. The second major priority will be Ukraine, where Denmark is currently at the forefront, and we wish to bring this into the presidency as well,” Mette Frederiksen said at a press conference about new ministries.
Denmark takes over the rotating presidency on July 1, 2025.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it constitutes the largest foreign policy task for Denmark in this decade and is an opportunity to influence the EU. It will be used to focus on security and migrants.
“Overall, we will focus on a Europe that must take greater responsibility for our own security, our own borders, and the influx of migrants into Europe,” Mette Frederiksen said.
During the presidency, Denmark will lay the tracks for the EU’s next seven-year budget.
“The Danish presidency will also help secure the framework for a new long-term European budget,” Mette Frederiksen said.
Denmark has nominated Dan Jørgensen (S) as EU commissioner and will appoint an EU minister on Thursday to prepare for the presidency.
In connection with the EU presidency, there will be extensive meeting activities on Danish soil.
The government has planned 15 meetings between EU country ministers to be held in Aalborg, Horsens, Herning, and Frederiksberg.
Danish ministers will lead meetings between member countries as well as prioritize which issues to promote and represent the countries to the other EU institutions.
This will be the eighth time Denmark has held the presidency. The last time was in 2012.
