Tallinn (Estonia) – Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, designated by European Union leaders as the next head of the EU’s foreign policy, submitted her resignation to her country’s president on Monday.
Ms. Kallas, in office since 2021, will remain in her position in Estonia until a new government is formed and sworn in.
“It was a very difficult period,” said the head of government, the first woman to hold this position in the history of this Baltic country, when speaking about her term during an interview on public radio. She recalled taking office during the Covid crisis and having to make immediate decisions.
The outgoing Prime Minister is also expected to soon resign from her position as leader of the Reform Party (center-right).
The appointment of Ms. Kallas, a declared opponent of the Kremlin, to the position of head of European diplomacy still needs to be voted on by the European Parliament. (07/15/2024)
