Brussels – Belgian Euro Commissioner Didier Reynders, responsible for Justice, wants to continue his mandate. He said this on Sunday in an interview with RTL-TVi.
The former minister for the French-speaking liberal party MR has already informed his party chairman Georges-Louis Bouchez and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who has been nominated for a second term, that he would like to continue working.
“We are going to extend the mandate of Koen Lenaerts as President of the Court of Justice of the European Union and we have already extended the mandate of Annemie Turtelboom at the European Court of Auditors,” he referred to two Belgians with a top European position. “Why not extend the mandate of the European Commissioner as well? In any case, I am ready to continue the work for the rule of law.”
“We are going to extend Koen Lenaerts’ term at the Court of Justice and have already extended Annemie Turtelboom’s term at the European Court of Auditors. Why not also renew the mandate of the European Commissioner?”

The appointment of a European Commissioner is part of the allocation of positions by the new federal coalition. Other names are also circulating, such as Frank Vandenbroucke (Vooruit) and Sophie Wilmès (MR).
Reynders tried to become Secretary General of the Council of Europe in June, but lost that battle against the Swiss Alain Berset.
