BRUSSELS (ANP) – The delegation leader of the Dutch political party CDA in the European Parliament Tom Berendsen is “very pleased with this nomination” of the Dutch European Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra for a second term. Berendsen is also pleasantly surprised that this important position is being given to a CDA member like Hoekstra. Because in the new Dutch governing coalition of the parties PVV, VVD, BBB, and NSC, the CDA is no longer included. “These are turbulent times in and around Europe, I am glad that the cabinet is opting for stability and experience,” says Berendsen.
Hoekstra still needs to be officially chosen by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, but that seems to be in order. Von der Leyen’s confidence in Hoekstra was recently shown when she expanded his current portfolio ‘Climate’. Von der Leyen has also given him ‘Transport’. This happened after the European Commissioner for Transport, Adina Valean, stopped her duties.
In the fall, Hoekstra also has to undergo a hearing in the European Parliament.
