The European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced today that it will no longer post on X and will use the competing Bluesky, becoming another organization to abandon this platform, which has faced criticism for its content.
“The EMA will no longer post content and updates on X. We believe the X platform no longer meets our communication needs,” the agency stated in an announcement.
“After careful consideration, the Agency decided to open an account on Bluesky,” as added.
EMA representatives were not immediately available for further comment. A request for comment was also submitted to X.
The EMA’s move follows those of other organizations that have either abandoned or reduced their use of the platform, including the non-governmental organization Center for Countering Digital Hate, Germany’s foreign affairs and defense ministries, the British newspaper Guardian, and many UK universities.
This development occurs at a time when X’s billionaire owner, Elon Musk, is increasing his political activity in Europe, with his latest action being a call to Germans to vote for a far-right party.
Musk helped Donald Trump win the recent presidential elections in the US, but his platform has been criticized by disinformation experts for facilitating the spread of fake news during the campaign.
Musk says he wants X to defend freedom of speech.
After Trump’s election victory, Bluesky gained millions of users but remains much smaller than its competitors.
The EMA is a decentralized EU agency responsible for the scientific evaluation, monitoring, and safe supervision of medicines. Its headquarters are in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
It was often in the spotlight during the COVID pandemic as it was the institution that decided on vaccines in the EU.
The European Commission and other EU organizations continue to use X. Earlier this month, the European Central Bank began using Bluesky, although it did not abandon X. (27/01/2025)
