Brussels/Bratislava – Slovakia does not support the proposal of the American administration to allow Ukraine to use long-range missiles against targets on the territory of the Russian Federation. This was stated by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic Marek Eštok during the Monday’s meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, reports a correspondent of TASR.
Eštok recalled that the Council of Ministers dealt with several important topics – the situation in Ukraine, in Georgia after the parliamentary elections, in the Middle East and in the Horn of Africa.
The most publicized topic was the decision of the outgoing US President Joe Biden, which allowed Ukraine to use American long-range missiles against targets in Russia’s deeper territory. Eštok pointed out that this topic was not the direct subject of discussions and was mentioned only very marginally. “A call was made to those countries that have already given (Ukraine) an adequate type of weapons, similar to these American long-range missiles, to be able to use all the technical capacities of these missiles, similar to the decision made by the American side,” he explained.
Eštok reiterated Monday’s call by the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic Robert Fico that Slovakia perceives the American proposal as an escalation of the conflict, which does not lead to a peaceful solution.
“Slovakia’s position has been clear from the beginning. We support peaceful solutions and initiatives and we do not consider this as a way to achieve a peaceful solution,” he stated.
He emphasized that it is a decision of the outgoing American administration and Slovakia relies, according to him, that the new American administration will approach a different type of solution to the situation in Ukraine.
“The elected president Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his conviction that he will manage to end the war in Ukraine, so we all expect how he will do it. Slovak diplomacy will support any peaceful solution that will lead to the end of the killing on both sides,” Eštok conveyed. (November 18th).
