BRUSSELS (ANP) – 1 billion euros will also be made available for innovation. “Our goal is clear: to ensure that the next generation of vehicles are not only manufactured in Europe, but also that innovation happens in Europe, driven by European technology,” said Tzitzikostas.
Earlier, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had already announced that European car manufacturers will have more time to meet their emission targets. Car manufacturers will have until 2027 to reduce their CO2 emissions. The agreement remains that only emission-free cars may be sold from 2035 onwards.
In addition to the supply of more electric cars, the demand for them must also increase, acknowledges Tzitzikostas. The Commission wants to coordinate with member states on how to persuade consumers to buy electric cars. For instance, it should become easier to repair electric cars. Subsidies for purchasing electric cars are not mentioned in the action plan.
The European Parliament and the member states still need to approve the Commission’s plan.
