Brussels – 60 journalistic organizations have called on the EU to suspend the association agreement with Israel and implement sanctions due to the killing of journalists and other violations of media freedom in Gaza. Among the signatories of the letter, which was created in light of preparations for the union’s foreign ministers’ meeting, are the Slovenian Journalists’ Association and the Slovenian Journalists’ Union.
As the organizations highlight in the letter, Israeli forces have killed more than 100 Palestinian journalists and media workers since the start of the war in Gaza. They emphasize that killing journalists is a war crime.
At the same time, they pointed out the complete prohibition of access to the Gaza area for independent media, a record number of arbitrary detentions of media personnel, allegations of torture, and mistreatment of journalists.
These violations and abuses call for a halt to the implementation of the association agreement between the EU and Israel and further union sanctions against those responsible, the organizations are convinced.
The organizations addressed the EU’s appeal during preparations for the informal meeting of foreign ministers, which will take place on Thursday in Brussels.
Foreign ministers have previously discussed the possibility of revising the agreement between the EU and Israel. This month, in light of developments in Gaza, Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob also joined the call of his Irish and Spanish colleagues to review the agreement between the EU and Israel.
