Brussels (dpa) – The European Commission is preparing an EU list of safe countries of origin to speed up asylum procedures across the bloc.

An initial list is to be presented in the coming weeks, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced in a letter to EU leaders on Monday.

According to the letter, the list is likely to include countries whose citizens have unsuccessfully applied for asylum in the EU in the vast majority of cases.

EU member states have their own lists of safe countries of origin, which means asylum applicants from those nations are more likely to be sent back as they are not deemed to be in danger.

The Commission also announced a regular review of the list.

Following the list’s publication, the Commission’s proposal must then be agreed by the EU member states and the European Parliament. (17 March)
