Another religious and cultural heritage site has been restored and returned to the community, thanks to the European Union program, EU4Culture.
The Church of St. Mary in Mamurras, about 20 kilometers northwest of Tirana, is a first-category cultural monument.
Historical data collected by Theodor Ippen, an Austrian diplomat who explored the region in the 19th century, states that the Church of St. Mary was one of the largest and most unique churches of medieval Albania.
There are still fresco remnants on the walls of the church’s interior apse.
Although very little remains, thanks to the new structure, they are now protected.
Lejla Hadzic, cultural heritage advisor at EU4Culture, explained the work process to those present at the inauguration ceremony./ (August 2)
