Nova Gorica/Ljubljana – Europe Day, when the EU commemorates the beginnings of European integration, was marked in Slovenia by the 20th anniversary of the country’s membership in the union and the upcoming European elections. At the state celebration on the anniversary of joining the EU in Nova Gorica, Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob and European Commissioner Janez Lenarčič called for participation in the elections.
The Prime Minister emphasized that in a month’s time at the European elections, we will decide what kind of Europe we want. It is our responsibility to exercise our voting rights and with our vote defend the European values that are a bastion of democracy, he said.
In his speech, Commissioner Lenarčič from Slovenia also called for participation in the elections. “The EU is peace, solidarity, unification, openness, and cooperation,” said the Commissioner. Whether it will remain so, he said, depends also on whether we will go to the European elections and ensure that our representatives in the EU institutions continue to strengthen the European project.
The state celebration took place in Nova Gorica, where 20 years ago Slovenia’s entry into the EU was welcomed by then Prime Minister Anton Rop, then President of the National Assembly Borut Pahor, and then President of the European Commission Romano Prodi, who attended the celebration along with the President of the Republic Nataša Pirc Musar and other high representatives of the state.
In the Slovenian city of Nova Gorica, which shares Europe Square with the Italian Gorizia, various activities took place throughout the day on Europe Day and the 20th anniversary of Slovenia’s membership in the union. Numerous events were also organized in other Slovenian cities and places, including Ljubljana. (May 9)
