VILNIUS/BRUSSELS – The European liberals are coming to The Hague to determine how closely the Dutch VVD aligns with the right-wing populist PVV. Within the European liberal ALDE party, there are doubts whether the VVD is going too far in this regard. There are also guidelines for ALDE members on how they should deal with the radical right, a spokesman said.
The pan-European party, in which many national liberal parties have united, has agreed that the party bureau will take stock in The Hague next summer. The VVD has invited the bureau for a visit.
Earlier, according to insiders, there was talk of a fact-finding mission, but it is not coming. Other sources around ALDE deny that there were plans for such a stronger measure, which ALDE used in the past when the Czech ANO party took an increasingly right-wing populist course.
ALDE forms a large part of the liberal Renew faction in the European Parliament. The French liberals, another important segment of the Renew faction, stated during the election campaign that the VVD no longer belongs there. But that threat has faded, sources within Renew said earlier.
