Brussels – The European Parliament’s Committee on Petitions discussed a petition on the preservation of the memory of the victims of communist violence in Slovenia, initiated by MEP Romana Tomc (EPP/SDS). It decided to prepare a draft resolution “on preserving the memory of the victims of the post-war communist period in Slovenia”, committee chair Bogdan Rzonca (ECR/PIS) presented the decision of the political group representatives in the committee on Tuesday.
Tomc stated that this is a “great success and recognition of my efforts to preserve the memory of the victims of communism in Slovenia”. After the draft resolution is prepared, it will first be discussed and decided upon by the committee, and if confirmed by the committee, by the European Parliament at a plenary session.
The petition, first signed by Slovenian historian Mitja Ferenc, was submitted to the parliament in 2023, after the government of Prime Minister Robert Golob abolished May 17 as the national day of remembrance for the victims of communist violence upon taking office in 2022. This day had previously been declared by the outgoing government led by Janez Janša.
The current government stated in December 2024 in response to the petition that it “recognizes the importance of remembering the victims of all wars and war-related victims”. According to its own statements, it pays special attention to the victims of post-World War II executions, but regarding the establishment of a new remembrance day for all war victims and post-war executions, it advocates for a “technically considered proposal that will achieve broad societal consensus”.
