THE HAGUE – GroenLinks-PvdA seems to have become the largest party in the Netherlands in the European Parliament elections. According to the first exit poll by Ipsos I&O/NOS, the center-left party gets 8 seats. The far-right PVV follows with 7, significantly more than the one seat that Geert Wilders’ party had held from the previous elections.
The Netherlands chose 31 of the 720 seats of the new European Parliament on Thursday. The election results may only be announced on Sunday. Most EU member states vote on Sunday.
According to the pollsters, the result per party could still be one seat lower or higher. Even if GroenLinks-PvdA indeed becomes the largest, they seem to have to accept a loss. PvdA now has 6 and GroenLinks has 3 Members of the European Parliament, totaling 9 together.
Under the leadership of Frans Timmermans, the PvdA won the European elections in the Netherlands handsomely in 2019. In these elections, more seats were to be distributed than five years ago. Although GroenLinks and PvdA form a joint faction in the House of Representatives and the Senate, they will each take their place in their own European faction after the European elections.
