BRUSSELS (ANP) – The first millions in additional financial emergency aid from the European Union for the Palestinian Authority were paid out on Wednesday. It concerns 150 million euros of the 400 million euros that the EU will transfer to the Palestinian Authority in the short term. Part of that first 150 million euros is intended to support vulnerable families. This was announced by the European Commission.
The remaining additional amount pledged by the European Union will be paid out under conditions in August and September. The European Union has made agreements with the Palestinian Authority on carrying out reforms. The Palestinian administration must, among other things, modernize and fight corruption. The Palestinian Authority must also reform education and social security.
“A strong and reformed Palestinian Authority is key to our common goal of a two-state solution,” said Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission. “This is the only way to achieve lasting peace for both Israelis and Palestinians.”
According to Von der Leyen, the financial emergency aid also “paves the way for the recovery and reconstruction of Gaza”.
At the beginning of September, the European Commission will submit a legislative proposal for a major recovery program, which should help the Palestinian Authority achieve a budget balance in 2026 and long-term financial stability.
The European Union has been financially supporting the Palestinians for years. For 2021-2024, approximately 1.2 billion euros have been allocated, of which 890 million euros have been approved.
